    Laurence Klotz

    Professor of Surgery
    Sunnybrook Research Institute, Canada

    Dr. Laurence Klotz is currently a professor of surgery at the University of Toronto (U of T) and past Chief of the Division of Urology at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center in Ontario. He is the current chairman of the Canadian Urology Research Consortium (CURC) and past chairman of the World Urologic Oncology Federation (WUOF). He holds the Sunnybrook Chair of Prostate Cancer Research. Dr. Klotz graduated from the U of T Faculty of Medicine and then completed the Toronto Gallie Program in Surgery. He completed a fellowship at MSKCC.

    He is a member of the American Association of Genito-Urinary Surgeons (AAGUS), past President of the Canadian Urological Association (CUA), and honorary member of the American, Chinese and Chilean Urological Associations.

    Professor Klotz’s research interests include molecular and metabolic effects of ADT, active surveillance, advanced imaging, focal therapy, and prostate cancer prevention. He has been the Principal Investigator for multicentre clinical trials of ADT, active surveillance, and prostate cancer imaging among numerous others. He took TULSA from the concept stage to canine and first-in-human studies, led the pivotal registration trial tha resulted in regulatory approval, and recently led a successful trial comparing TULSA to radical prostatectomy.

    He is the editor emeritus of the Canadian Urology Association Journal, and is an honorary director of Prostate Cancer Canada. During his career, he has authored approximately 550 peer-reviewed scientific publications and 7 books.

    He has received many awards, including the Queen’s Jubilee Medal for meritorious public service (2013), the Lister Prize from U of T (2014), the Society of Urologic Oncology (SUO) Medal (2014), the Warwick Prize awarded by the Canadian Cancer Society (2015), the Order of Canada (2015), LIfetime Achievement Awards from the Canadian Urological Association and the University of Toronto, and the Keyes Medal from the AAGUS in 2026.
