Joe Philip is President of the British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS), having previously served as President Elect, Vice President and Deputy Vice President for Education.
Joe is a Consultant Endourological Surgeon in Bristol since 2011, after attending Medical College in Calicut, Southern India, and having had his higher specialist Urology training in the Mersey region & Birmingham. His research interests are in kidney stones disease and reducing differential attainment.
His group looks into evaluating risk factors for sepsis, increased hospital stay and morbidity in patients undergoing stone procedures, and outcomes of shockwave lithotripsy. Attempts at identifying risk factors for recurrence of stone disease, including with use of machine learning continue.
Joe is a passionate campaigner for Equity, improving on Diversity and Inclusion in Education, Representation and Leadership. He leads a research group evaluating In-equity, regulator bodies’ attitudes & differential language, having reported on representation of females, ethnic minorities and doctors from disadvantaged backgrounds on National bodies, especially in Urology.
As President of the International British Urology Society for a 6-year period ending 2025, he has worked towards supporting colleagues in difficulty and empowering younger urologists and students.
Joe is an Honorary Associate Professor at the School of Engineering, Mathematics & Technology at University of Bristol, U.K, International Professor with Apollo Hospitals Educational & Research Foundation, India, Honorary Professor of Urology with Bridgetown International University, Barbados, Journal of Clinical Urology Endourology Section editor and an Alumni of The King’s Fund having undertaken their Strategic Clinical Leaders Programme.
