Dr. Laurence Klotz is currently a professor of surgery at the University of Toronto (U of T) and past Chief of the Division of Urology at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center in Ontario. He is the current chairman of the Canadian Urology Research Consortium (CURC) and the World Urologic Oncology Federation (WUOF).
Dr. Klotz graduated from the U of T Faculty of Medicine and then completed the Toronto Gallie Program in Surgery at the same institution. He completed a fellowship in Urology Oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC).
He is a member of the American Association of Genito-Urinary Surgeons (AAGUS), past President of the Urological Research Society (URS) and the Canadian Urological Association (CUA), and honorary member of the American, Chinese and Chilean Urological Associations.
Professor Klotz’s research interests include molecular and metabolic effects of androgens and androgen deprivation therapy (ADT), active surveillance, focal therapy for low-risk disease using high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU), and prostate cancer prevention. He has been the national or international Principal Investigator for multicentre clinical trials of ADT, active surveillance, and biomarkers for prostate cancer, among numerous others.
Professor Klotz is the associate editor of the Journal of Urology responsible for prostate cancer, the editor emeritus of the Canadian Urology Association Journal, and is an honorary director of Prostate Cancer Canada. During his career, he has authored approximately 350 peer-reviewed scientific publications and 5 books.
He has received many awards and prizes, most notably the Queen’s Jubilee Medal for meritorious public service (2013), the Lister Prize from U of T (2014), the Society of Urologic Oncology (SUO) Medal (2014), the Warwick Prize awarded by the Canadian Cancer Society (2015), and the Order of Canada (2015).
