Professor Nikhil Vasdev is an internationally recognised urological and robotic surgeon, academic leader, and innovator in the field of urological cancer surgery. He serves as Consultant Urological and Robotic Surgeon at the Hertfordshire & Bedfordshire Urological Cancer Centre, East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust, and is Professor and Chair of Robotic Surgery at University of Hertfordshire.
Professor Vasdev specialises in robotic surgery for prostate, bladder, and kidney cancers, with expertise in nerve-sparing robotic prostatectomy, robotic cystectomy with intracorporeal urinary diversion, and robotic partial nephrectomy. He has performed more than 1,800 robotic urological cancer procedures and is an internationally accredited robotic surgery proctor, supporting the development of robotic programmes across Europe and Asia.
Alongside his clinical practice, Professor Vasdev is a passionate researcher with over 230 peer-reviewed publications and multiple funded research programmes. His research interests include artificial intelligence in surgery, surgical ergonomics, low-pressure robotic surgery, nociception monitoring, enhanced recovery pathways, and innovations in bladder cancer diagnosis, including Blue Light Cystoscopy. He has led pioneering clinical trials exploring the impact of artificial intelligence and low-pressure pneumoperitoneum on patient outcomes following robotic prostatectomy.
Professor Vasdev has held several senior leadership roles, including Associate Medical Director and Cancer Lead at East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust, where he played a key role in maintaining and transforming cancer services during the COVID-19 pandemic. His contributions to surgical innovation, research, and education were recognised by the award of an Honorary Doctor of Science (DSc) from the University of Hertfordshire.
A dedicated educator and mentor, he supervises medical students, research fellows, and postgraduate trainees and is committed to advancing the future of robotic surgery through research, training, and international collaboration. His work continues to shape modern urological cancer care and improve outcomes for patients worldwide.
